20. Cook 25 different recipes I’ve never made before [1/25]

As luck would have it, last night turned out to be a combination of extra free time and a non-gym night, so we got to make the first of 25 new recipies. Since Lauren is a fish-tarian, there’s only so many things we will both eat (and like), but she found a good recipe online.

The task: Creamy Saffron Shrimp with Gnocchi and Caramelized Onion

Although the recipe had a decent amount of prep time (props to Lauren for peeling a 4-day supply of shrimp while I ate snacks and snuck in Yankees coverage), it wasn’t terribly complicated. Basically, you prepare and saute the vegetables, mix in the shrimp, and then add the (cooked) gnocchi and seasoning.

Here are some pictures from the prep:

While this is going on, we made the gnocchi. It was mushier than most of the brands I've had before, but still good.

Next you add the shrimp. If you're lucky, someone else peels it for you.

Eventually you mix it all together and add spices. At this point you are also probably starving.

The finished product! Highly recommend it.

There you have it – shrimp with gnocchi, and some carrots and lettuce thrown in to pretend I lead a healthy lifestyle. You are supposed to put shredded basil and parmesan cheese on top, but at this point eating was a bigger priority than cutting basil into little pieces. The onions make it a little sweet, which I didn’t expect. The only thing I would have changed is the gnocchi – this brand ended up too soft and it would have tasted better with a tougher consistency.

I would definitely make this again, and considering the Yankees won while it was cooked, I consider this a good luck meal (other potential factors: 1. We played the Nationals).

I love the first pic when you are cunningly slicing the onion towards your hand and wrist in a classic “I do not know how to safely handle a knife” move. Bravo!

I just saw on TV that saffron helps boost your sex drive. For those out there needing assistance in that dept, this may be a good one to try… haha
