If you dug a hole through the earth, where would you end up?

antipodesYou always hear the cliche about digging a hole to China. As it turns out, people in Argentina actually can.

In what can only be described as “breaking news to me,” the point opposite you on earth is called an antipode. In the map to the left (click on it for a larger version), you can see which points on earth correspond to places across the world. As it turns out, most opposites just lead you to water, with small parts of East Asia and Antartica as the exceptions.

Next time someone mockingly tells you they are going to dig to China, tell them they should, since they will likely drown in the Indian Ocean. Or from magma poisoning.
