The Delaware Department of Transportation wanted to teach its employees to not be racist. Now, racism and discrimination are sensitive topics, so you want to make sure you do everything possible to make the rules clear.
Below is a sampling of the hilariously specific list of things the newsletter contained:
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender co-workers
• “Have you thought about getting help?”
You are stereotyping, telling the person there’s something wrong that should be fixed.
Asian co-workers
• “You must be the new IT person.”
All Asians are not IT professionals.
African-American co-workers
• “Should we order fried chicken or watermelon for you?”
This is stereotyping and shows ignorance.
Older co-workers
• “You know Wal-Mart is hiring.”
This is not funny. An older employee has experience you could benefit from.
Hispanic/Latino co-workers
• “Can you help me out with my landscaping?”
Why would you assume that all Hispanics/Latinos are landscaping experts?
The entire actual newsletter can be found here, and is worth reading if you are ignorant because you just crossed the border, or whatever: DelDOT Newsletter.
